De Anza College About Sexually Transmitted Infections Questions

STIs are infections that are passed from one person to another during vaginal, anal, and oral sex. They’re really common, and lots of people who have them don’t have any symptoms. STIs can be dangerous, but the good news is that getting tested is no big deal, and most STIs are easy to treat.

Strategies for preventing STIs include abstinence, monogamy, being informed, remaining sober, inspecting oneself and one’s partner, using latex condoms or dental dams, avoiding high-risk sex, washing the genitals before and after sex, having regular medical checkups, engaging in noncoital sexual activity (outercourse), and getting to know one’s partner before engaging in sexual activity.

Assignment:

Watch the Sexually Transmitted Infections video, answer the below questions in 75 words or less, and comment on another student’s post.:

  1. When is the appropriate time to tell a person that you have a sexually transmitted infection? How would you ask whether or not they’ve engaged in any risky behaviors? (Many STIs can be asymptomatic, it is important to know about past behaviors even if no STI was diagnosed.)
  2. How would you ask a dating partner if she/he has had a sexually transmitted infection in the past? Describe a way to bring up the topic of condom use with your partner. How might you encourage someone who does not want to use a condom?
  3. Is it unethical to withhold information about you having an STI until sex becomes a part of the relationship?
  4. If you were diagnosed with an STI that you believe you have contracted by your current partner, how would you bring a discussion of STI with him or her?
  5. Would you date someone if you knew they had herpes? Would you continue to date them? Why or why not?

Although speaking to ones partner about STI’s can seem awkward, it is important I think to bring the topic up casually in the beginning; say something like “if you really love me, then let’s agree to not take any unneeded risks.”

STI’s can be spread via non-sexual behavior; withholding info about an infection seems entirely unethical; sit down with your partner, and just be calm & honest.

Ultimately, true love is all that truly matters.
