Again, an important component of understanding criminal and delinquent behavior is understanding why people engage in this behavior. In your last assignment, you were asked to discuss theoretical explanations for general criminal behavior. In this assignment, you will be asked to take a similar approach to specific criminal behavior. Pick one of the following options:
Assignment Option 1: Theoretical Explanations for Substance Use
For this assignment, consider the different theoretical explanations for substance use that have been explored in the class thus far (see the list of examples below). Which theory, or theories, do you think are particularly well suited to explain illicit substance use? Be sure to consider the possibility of different explanations for sporadic (or first use), compared to chronic use (e.g., addiction). Is one theory particularly well suited for explaining sporadic use, compared to chronic use (or vice versa)? In your assignment, you should clearly state which theory you chose and describe this theory in detail. Why did you choose this theory, rather than a different theory?
Theories for consideration: Opportunity/Subcultural theories; social integration (e.g., anomie); social conflict (e.g., power-control); self-derogation theory; social strain; euphoria/seduction theories; social learning theories; self-control theory
Assignment Option 2: Theoretical Explanations for Domestic Violence
For this assignment, consider the different theoretical explanations for domestic violence that have been explored in the class thus far (see the list of examples below). Which theory, or theories, do you think are particularly well suited to explain domestic violence? Be sure to consider the possibility of different explanations for sporadic/occasional, compared to chronic violence. Is one theory particularly well suited for explaining sporadic, compared to chronic violence (and vice versa)? In your assignment, you should clearly state which theory you chose and describe this theory in detail. Why did you choose this theory, rather than a different theory?
Theories for consideration: Exchange/social control model, power/dominance theories, feminist theory, subcultural theories, routine activities theory, strain theory, frustration-aggression theories, reciprocity, self-control theory, social learning theories.
